Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy originally developed to support people who experience intense emotions and difficulties with emotion regulation. It is widely used for problems such as chronic emotional distress, relationship difficulties, impulsive behaviours, anger, and features of Borderline Personality Disorder. 

DBT is based on the idea that people are doing the best they can with the skills they have, while also recognising that new skills are often needed to manage strong emotions more effectively. Therapy balances acceptance of a person’s experience with active support for change.

DBT focuses on teaching practical, structured skills in four key areas:

  • understanding and regulating emotions

  • tolerating distress without making things worse

  • improving relationships and communication

  • increasing awareness and presence in the moment

DBT is highly skills-based and practical. It helps people develop greater emotional stability, reduce reactive behaviours, and build more effective ways of responding to stress, conflict, and interpersonal challenges.
